A brain surgeon beat 22 years of math with ChatGPT

Jin Shanmu is a neurosurgery resident in Beijing. His degree is in geology and every bit of math past the basics is self-taught, picked up for his research on brain ultrasounds.

Last month he proved Crouzeix's conjecture, a matrix problem that had stumped mathematicians since 2004.

His method was a 16-hour autonomous run of GPT-5.6 Sol in ChatGPT Work. He cut the model off from the internet, told it to split into subagents that chase different strategies and audit each other's proofs, then walked away.

The proof survived. Michel Crouzeix, who posed the problem, checked it himself and believes it's correct, with formal peer review still pending. The exact prompt sits on GitHub, adapted from one OpenAI used on another open conjecture.

Eight days later two mathematicians posted an independent proof. They disclosed using ChatGPT too.

OpenAI's new data center sits on a Cold War uranium site

OpenAI said Monday it will take about 8 gigawatts of computing at a planned Ohio data center. The site is the former Portsmouth plant in Pike County, where America enriched uranium through the Cold War.

SB Energy builds and owns the campus, OpenAI leases it for 20 years and Nvidia is putting $1.5 billion into the developer. Every chip inside will be Nvidia's.

The project promises 35,000 construction jobs through 2032, 2,500 permanent roles and an $80 million community fund. OpenAI says the grid upgrades stay off Ohio power bills.

There's a student angle too. About 844,000 Ohio college students get $100 each in Codex credits this school year, up to $84 million in all.

The first 800 megawatts are expected in 2028. The rest needs new gas plants that don't exist yet.

Sounds like a the start of a movie that doesn’t end well for humanity. Let’s hope it’s just a coincidence.

China's GLM-5.3 dug up a bug from 1981

Z.ai, the Chinese lab behind the GLM models, shipped GLM-5.3. Z.ai calls it the strongest open-weights coder, and the release notes admit its hacking skills grew faster than the team expected.

On CyberGym, the benchmark for finding software vulnerabilities, it scored 84.5 percent. That's ahead of Anthropic's Mythos 5 and OpenAI's GPT-5.6 Sol, the two best closed models on the test.

Then Z.ai pointed it at real code alongside Chinese security teams. It surfaced 2,436 vulnerabilities across 269 open-source projects, 1,097 of them rated high or critical. The oldest bug had been sitting in a codebase since 1981, and the average one went unnoticed for 26 years.

Everything runs through a public disclosure ledger, with most findings still under embargo. The weights go public in two weeks, after safety checks.

Higgsfield quadrupled to $5.4 billion in seven months

Higgsfield, the AI video startup started by a former Snap executive, raised $400 million on Monday at a $5.4 billion valuation. In January it was worth $1.3 billion.

Their revenue does the talking. The company says it's annualizing $700 million, up from roughly $20 million a year ago, with 30 million people using it to turn prompts and images into cinematic video.

DST Global led the round, with Goldman Sachs and Intel Capital among the backers. Scarce compute drove the raise, the company says, and the new money reserves capacity.
