AI May Help Identify High-Risk Heart Patients

AI could help doctors spot patients at high risk for deadly heart conditions. Researchers at the University of Leeds developed an AI tool, Optimise, that analyzed health records of over two million people. It found many had undiagnosed conditions or weren't on the right medications.

Among the records, over 400,000 were flagged as high-risk for heart failure, stroke, and diabetes, representing 74% of heart-related deaths. In a smaller study, one in five high-risk patients had undiagnosed chronic kidney disease, and more than half with high blood pressure needed medication changes.

This AI could lead to earlier treatment, reducing strain on the NHS. A larger trial is planned to test its effectiveness.

GPT-4 Helps Model Biological Structures

A recent study by researchers from Rutgers University shows that GPT-4 can help scientists model biological structures.

Although GPT-4 was originally designed for natural language processing, it has now demonstrated the ability to model 3D structures of amino acids and analyze drug-protein interactions.

With the help of Wolfram mathematical computations, GPT-4 successfully modeled an α-helix, a key protein structure.

While this research is still in its early stages, it opens up exciting new possibilities for complex biological modeling and drug discovery applications.

New AI Model Improves Facial Restoration in Low-Quality Videos

Restoring faces in videos can be tricky, especially when the video quality is poor or the faces are at different angles. Many older methods require aligning faces first, but this often introduces errors, leading to unnatural results across frames.

The Parsing-Guided Temporal-Coherent Transformer (PGTFormer), developed by Kepeng Xu and the team, offers a new approach.

This model outperforms traditional methods, delivering more natural facial restoration, even with non-standard poses.

OpenAI and Anthropic Partner with U.S. AI Safety Institute for Model Testing

OpenAI and Anthropic, two leading AI startups, have agreed to let the U.S. AI Safety Institute test their new models before public release to address safety and ethics concerns. This collaboration follows a 2023 executive order from the Biden administration requiring AI safety assessments. The partnership aims to evaluate and mitigate risks in AI development.

OpenAI is also reportedly in talks to raise funding, potentially valuing the company at over $100 billion. Meanwhile, California lawmakers have passed an AI safety bill that could mandate safety testing for advanced AI models, though it faces opposition from tech companies worried about stifling innovation.
