🍏 Apple’s Siri overhaul faces serious delays

Cath Virginia / The Verge
Apple’s much-hyped upgrade to Siri, expected to roll out this fall with iOS 18, may not be ready until 2027.
Internal reports say the smarter Siri—designed to edit photos, send texts, and handle complex voice tasks—has hit roadblocks due to leadership turnover, hardware setbacks, and internal friction.
Key points:
• Apple planned a fall 2025 launch with personalized, on-device AI
• Only basic improvements may ship this year
• Full conversational capabilities might not arrive until 2027
• Delays are widening the gap with rivals like Microsoft Copilot and Google Gemini
If Apple wants Siri to compete with modern AI assistants, it’s going to need more than just a software update.

OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever is launching a new AI research lab—and he’s doing it with major backing. Alphabet and Nvidia have reportedly invested in the venture, called Safe Superintelligence Inc. (SSI).
What we know so far:
• SSI aims to develop powerful AI systems with a focus on safety and alignment
• The lab will operate independently from OpenAI
• It was co-founded by former OpenAI researcher Daniel Gross
• Sutskever left OpenAI in early 2025 following internal disagreements
With two of the most powerful players in tech behind it, SSI could become a serious challenger in the next wave of frontier AI development.
🇮🇪 Ireland opens GDPR probe into Elon Musk’s Grok AI

Ireland’s privacy watchdog has launched a formal investigation into Grok AI, the chatbot developed by Elon Musk’s xAI.
The inquiry centers on whether personal data from EU users was used without permission during Grok’s training—via data pulled from X (formerly Twitter).
Details:
• Grok’s training data may include EU user content scraped from X
• EU regulators had already warned X to stop using data for AI
• xAI could face fines or restrictions under GDPR
• Ireland's DPC has jurisdiction as X's EU HQ is in Dublin
If Grok violated GDPR rules, the fallout could ripple through all of xAI’s global ambitions.
🇺🇸AI Industry to Congress: 'We Need Energy' to Compete with China

Susan Walsh/AP
Top U.S. AI executives just told Congress something simple but serious: if the U.S. wants to stay ahead of China in the AI race, it needs a lot more electricity—fast.
AI systems like ChatGPT and self-driving tech need massive computing power, and that means giant data centers burning through huge amounts of energy. But right now, the U.S. power grid isn’t ready for that future.
What they’re asking for:
• Faster approval for new energy projects
• More investment in nuclear and clean power
• Smarter energy policy that matches the pace of AI development
The message is clear: to keep the U.S. on top in AI, it’s not just about chips and models—it’s about making sure the lights stay on.
