Microsoft's VALL-E 2: AI Voice Tech Too Advanced for Public Release

Microsoft's VALL-E 2 is a cutting-edge text-to-speech system that can generate human-like speech from just a few seconds of audio.

It uses innovative techniques like Repetition Aware Sampling and Grouped Code Modeling to enhance stability and speed.

Despite its advanced capabilities, Microsoft is not releasing it publicly due to potential misuse, such as voice imitation without consent.

The researchers suggest developing protocols for consent and digital marking of AI-generated content before such technology is widely available.

Kyutai's Moshi: The Revolutionary Conversational AI Set to Go Open-Source

French AI startup Kyutai has unveiled Moshi, an AI assistant that engages in natural, real-time conversations with a latency of 200-240 milliseconds.

Developed in six months by a small team, Moshi uses a novel "audio language model" to handle and predict speech from compressed audio data.

It was trained with diverse sources, including human motion data and YouTube videos.

Aimed at improving accessibility, particularly for people with disabilities, Moshi can express 70 emotions and styles and even recite poetry with a French accent.

Kyutai plans to release Moshi's technology as open source soon.

Apple’s Phil Schiller to Join OpenAI’s Board as Non-Voting Observer

Apple will gain a non-voting observer seat on OpenAI's board as part of a new agreement to integrate ChatGPT into its products.

Phil Schiller, Apple's App Store head, will represent Apple, similar to Microsoft's existing position.

This partnership allows ChatGPT to be used in iOS, macOS, and iPadOS platforms, including Siri and various writing tools.

Apple won't pay OpenAI directly, but the exposure to Apple's user base is valuable for OpenAI, though it may increase their computing costs.

The non-voting board seats give Apple and Microsoft insight into OpenAI's operations, reducing risks of unexpected changes.

However, this close relationship raises some antitrust concerns about transparency and societal impact.

Samsung Expects Profits to Jump by More Than 1,400%

Samsung Electronics forecasts a 15-fold profit increase for Q2 2024, driven by rising AI chip prices.

Expected profits are 10.4tn won ($7.54bn), surpassing analysts' estimates. This announcement boosted Samsung shares by over 2% in early Seoul trading.

The AI boom, also benefiting Nvidia, has significantly increased demand for AI chips in data centers and smartphones.

Despite strong profits, Samsung faces a potential three-day strike next week, with workers demanding a more transparent bonus and time-off system.
