A Breakthrough in Efficient Language Models by AI Researchers

Researchers from the Allen Institute for AI, Contextual AI, University of Washington, and Princeton University introduced OLMoE, a new open-source Mixture-of-Experts language model that combines efficiency with high performance.

This model is designed to be faster and cheaper to run compared to other large models like GPT-4 and Llama2.

OLMoE activates only 1 billion of its 7 billion total parameters at a time. This significantly reduces the resource demand, making OLMoE about 10x more efficient compared to models like Llama2-13B and GPT-4.

New Robot Framework Uses Prompt Tuning to Help with Daily Tasks Like Feeding and Grooming

A new study introduces an exciting framework for assistive robot manipulation, targeting real-world tasks like feeding or helping people with daily activities. 

The researchers used a method called "prompt tuning" to adapt large vision-language models without retraining them entirely. 

Also, a new dataset with 10 common tasks (e.g., feeding a human, brushing hair) was created to evaluate the system, showing impressive results. 

Llama-3.1-Storm-8B is Here

A new 8B parameter LLM outperforms Meta Llama-3.1-8B-Instruct and Hermes-3-Llama-3.1-8B across diverse benchmarks in 7 out of 9 tests. With 8 billion parameters, it’s much better at tasks like answering questions, following instructions, and reducing mistakes.

What makes it special? The team used smart techniques like self-curation and fine-tuning to help the model learn from the best examples and work efficiently on limited hardware. 

The model also used model merging to combine two strong models. Using a technique called SLERP, the team blended the best features of both models to create something even more powerful. 

This helped improve its results on important AI benchmarks.
