AI Meets Chrome: Google's Gemini Powers New Tools for Search and Shopping

Google is elevating your Chrome experience with new Gemini-powered features for desktop. The latest update introduces Google Lens, now available in Chrome’s address bar and menu which lets you interact with web content like never before—whether it’s identifying products in photos or solving math equations.

Shopping gets a boost with Tab Compare, an AI-driven feature that summarizes specs, prices, and reviews of products across different tabs, simplifying your decision-making process.

Another exciting update is AI-powered search history. You can now use natural language queries, like “What was that ice cream shop I looked at last week?” to quickly find past pages. These features mark a new era in how we browse, with AI making our online lives smarter and more intuitive.

Microsoft Now Lists OpenAI as a Competitor: What This Means for AI and Search

Microsoft has officially listed OpenAI as a competitor in a recent SEC filing, despite a $13 billion investment and deep integration of OpenAI’s models in Microsoft products.

This shift comes amid antitrust concerns and FTC scrutiny of cloud providers' investments in AI startups.

Microsoft has also relinquished its board observer seat at OpenAI. This move echoes historical tech rivalries like Yahoo and Google.

Additionally, Microsoft is hiring top talent from Inflection AI to lead a new AI division, focusing on projects like Microsoft Copilot to build its own AI future.

AI Music Startup Suno Defends Training on Copyrighted Songs as ‘Fair Use’

AI music startup Suno has admitted to training its AI models on copyrighted music, citing fair-use doctrine in response to a lawsuit from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

The RIAA accuses Suno and another startup, Udio, of using copyrighted songs without permission, calling it "industrial scale infringement." Suno's CEO, Mikey Shulman, compared the AI's learning process to a child writing rock songs after listening to the genre, but the RIAA strongly disagrees.

This case could set a significant precedent for AI-generated content and the complexities of fair use in AI training, impacting the future of the music industry.

GitHub Launches GitHub Models for AI Development

GitHub has introduced GitHub Models, a platform for developers to access and experiment with AI models within GitHub.

Currently in limited public beta, it offers models like Llama 3.1 and GPT-4o, a built-in playground for testing, integration with GitHub Codespaces for ready-to-use environments, and deployment options via paid Azure accounts. To start, visit the GitHub Marketplace and join the waitlist.

This initiative aims to make AI tools more accessible and foster innovation within GitHub.
