Australia Bans DeepSeek

Beata Zawrzel

Australia has banned the Chinese AI app DeepSeek on all government devices due to security concerns.

The Department of Home Affairs mandated its immediate removal, citing potential risks. South Australia followed suit, banning the app across its networks. While private use is still allowed, officials have advised critical infrastructure operators to avoid DeepSeek.

DeepSeek, which recently gained popularity for its cost-efficient AI models, has raised concerns about data security under Chinese laws. This ban aligns Australia with other countries like Italy and Taiwan, which have also restricted DeepSeek over privacy risks.

Google has removed a pledge from its website stating it would not develop AI for weapons or surveillance.

Bloomberg first spotted the change, which involved deleting the “applications we will not pursue” section from its AI principles page.

In response, Google pointed TechCrunch to a new blog post on “responsible AI,” emphasizing collaboration to create AI that protects people, supports global progress, and enhances national security.

The updated AI principles focus on reducing harm, preventing bias, and aligning with international law. Meanwhile, Google has faced internal protests over its military cloud contracts. Though the company claims its AI does not cause harm, the Pentagon’s AI chief recently noted that some private AI models are accelerating U.S. military operations.

Yann LeCun, a pioneer in artificial intelligence and Meta’s chief AI scientist, predicts a significant AI revolution within the next three to five years, essential for developing domestic robots and fully autonomous vehicles.

He emphasizes that current AI systems excel at language manipulation but lack understanding of the physical world, necessitating new breakthroughs.

LeCun, along with six others, was awarded the £500,000 Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering for contributions to machine learning.

Fellow laureate Yoshua Bengio highlighted the importance of addressing AI safety and urged global leaders to consider the technology’s potential power and risks at the upcoming Paris summit.

ChatGPT on WhatsApp Can Now See, Hear, and Remember

OpenAI

OpenAI has enhanced ChatGPT’s integration with WhatsApp, enabling users to send photos and voice messages for analysis and response.

This allows for tasks like translating foreign-language signs via images or transcribing audio clips. Additionally, account linking has been introduced, allowing ChatGPT to remember user preferences and past interactions across platforms.

These updates aim to make AI interactions more seamless and intuitive within the widely used messaging app.
