OpenAI is considering introducing advertisements into ChatGPT to enhance revenue, despite CEO Sam Altman's personal reservations about ads. CFO Sarah Friar indicated that while the company is exploring this avenue, there are no immediate plans for implementation.

This move aligns with OpenAI's transition towards a for-profit model, aiming to offset the substantial costs associated with developing advanced AI models. Currently, ChatGPT boasts over 250 million weekly active users, contributing to an annual revenue of $4 billion.

However, expenses are projected to exceed $5 billion, prompting the exploration of new monetization strategies.

🌍️ Researchers Introduce 3D Convex Splatting: A Better Way to Render Virtual Worlds

A team of researchers from the University of Liège, KAUST, and the University of Oxford have developed a new approach to rendering 3D scenes that could significantly improve how we experience virtual environments.

Their method, called 3D Convex Splatting (3DCS), addresses key limitations in current rendering techniques while reducing computational demands.

Key improvements include:

Up to 0.81 better PSNR (Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio)
0.026 improvement in LPIPS (Learned Perceptual Image Patch Similarity)
Reduced memory requirements compared to current methods
Maintained high-speed rendering capabilities

This advancement has significant implications for Virtual and augmented reality applications, 3D modeling and design software, Architectural visualization, etc.

The research team has made their work available through their project page at convexsplatting.github.io, enabling other researchers and developers to build upon their findings.

🇨🇳 Chinese AI Firms Rush Out Costly ‘reasoning’ Models

Chinese technology companies are rapidly developing advanced "reasoning" AI models to compete with OpenAI's o1, aiming to enhance capabilities in complex tasks such as mathematics and programming.

Alibaba Cloud recently introduced QwQ-32B-Preview, a 32.5 billion parameter model that reportedly matches or surpasses o1 in specific benchmark tests.

Similarly, AI research company DeepSeek unveiled DeepSeek-R1-Lite-Preview, claiming performance on par with o1. These developments reflect China's efforts to close the AI development gap with the U.S., with domestic firms striving to emulate and advance upon OpenAI's methodologies.

⚒️ New Open Source AI Tool Released for Synthetic Data Generation

Finding quality training data is expensive, time-consuming, and often comes with privacy headaches.

Stacklock released Promptwright, a Python library that's about to make dataset generation for ML models easier.

Key highlights:

Works with both local LLMs and the big players (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini)
Plays nice with Ollama and VLLM for local model support
Uses simple YAML files for configuration (goodbye complicated scripts!)
Comes with a CLI for those command-line warriors
Direct integration with Hugging Face Hub

Early benchmarks are looking spicy - models trained on Promptwright's synthetic data are hitting 85-95% of the performance compared to real-world data.

As synthetic data becomes more mainstream, tools like Promptwright could become essential parts of every AI developer's toolkit.
