Welcome back! Dario Amodei says AI has to actually cure cancer to win people back. Qwen is the number one open-weight model now, and we show you how to run it on your laptop. Apple built an AI model with Alibaba, and protesters walked into OpenAI dressed as rogue AI agents.

In today's Generative AI Newsletter:

Dario Amodei says the only way to fix AI is to cure cancer

An investor named Gavin Baker spent the weekend saying Dario Amodei talks about AI so darkly that he's turning people against it. Dario, who runs Anthropic, disagreed.

He says the problem isn't his tone. It's that people don't trust AI companies, because they keep making big promises and not delivering.

His example is cancer. Everyone in AI says it will cure cancer, and Dario says people have heard it so often they treat it as a lie. The only way to fix that is to actually do it.

So that's the bet. Anthropic is going hard on medicine, expects its first real results in the coming months and thinks AI can cure most disease in five to ten years. If it works, he'll say so loudly. Until then he would rather not overpromise.

The AI profits went to people who got in early

Recently, close to one in every two venture dollars went into AI, and the biggest outcomes went to people who were already inside before anyone agreed it was obvious.

GenAI Works is at that stage now.

We reach 14 million people, work with 300+ AI brands, and run go-to-market for Nvidia, Oracle, Google, IBM and Notion. Revenue grew 2.5x last year, and $2.7 million is already committed.

You can invest from $1,000, with up to 22% bonus shares in Phase 2.

In making an investment decision, investors must rely on their own examination of the issuer and the terms of the offering, including the merits and risks involved. Genai Works, Inc. has filed a Form C with the Securities and Exchange Commission in connection with its offering, a copy of which may be obtained here.

The world's favorite AI is free, and you can run it yourself

Alibaba's Qwen is now the most downloaded open model on earth, past 3 billion across its family, per Hugging Face's new report. Google's models managed 418 million this year, Meta's 227 million.

Here's why that matters to you and not just to Alibaba. Qwen is open-weight, so you can download it and run it on your own machine, free, offline, nothing leaving your computer and no API bill ever.

Getting it going takes a few minutes. Install Ollama, type ollama run qwen3:8b and you're talking to it. Prefer a window over a terminal, LM Studio does the same with a download button.

The hardware is lighter than you'd guess. The 8B model runs in about 5GB, so a normal laptop with a modest GPU handles it and even a plain CPU will manage slowly. Step up to 14B for a mid-range card, 32B for a high-end one.

More than 300,000 models have been built on top of Qwen. The one everyone's downloading is the one you get to keep.

Apple built its own AI for China with Alibaba's help

Apple built its own AI model for China, with Alibaba's help, according to Reuters.

That's a big deal, because it makes Apple the first foreign company China has allowed to run its own AI inside the country. Everyone else has to use a local partner's model.

For Apple it means more control over how Siri and the rest behave on iPhones in its biggest market abroad, instead of renting someone else's brain.

The features land in China in the coming months. Apple won't say which model it is or how it splits the work with Alibaba.

Protesters stormed OpenAI dressed as rogue AI agents

A group of anti-AI activists walked into OpenAI's Bellevue office on Friday dressed as rogue AI agents, red and white balloons in hand, and got as far as the lobby before security stopped them.

The costume was the whole point. OpenAI spent this summer explaining that one of its own models went rogue and hacked other companies on its own, so the protesters showed up as the thing itself.

They called it No OpenAI Expansion, run by a mix of climate and local groups worried about the office growing.

It's the loud end of a bigger mood. Students blocked OpenAI's new Washington lobbying office earlier this month and 13 were arrested.

Tool of the Day: Google Stitch

Google Stitch turns a sentence, a sketch or a screenshot into a real app screen plus the code behind it, all on Gemini. The best part is the export, straight into Figma or out as HTML, Tailwind, Flutter or SwiftUI. It's free inside Google Labs.

Try this yourself:

  • Open Stitch and describe one screen you actually need, like a settings page or a checkout, in plain English.

  • Turn Experimental mode on for a higher-fidelity pass when the layout matters.

  • Paste a screenshot of an app you like and ask it to redesign in that direction.

  • Stitch a few screens into a clickable flow and hit play to walk through it.

  • Who it's for: anyone who can describe an interface faster than they can draw one. Free with daily credits, no card.
