A class at the United Nations University Center for Policy Research has built two AI avatars to simulate experiences from the Sudan conflict, raising tough questions about how digital storytelling intersects with ethics, trauma, and representation. The avatars were part of an exploratory academic project, not a formal UN initiative.
What the project involved:
Two avatars were created: Amina, a fictional Sudanese refugee in Chad, and Abdalla, a fictional soldier from the Rapid Support Forces
Visitors could speak with the avatars, but the interface was broken during early testing
Led by Columbia professor Eduardo Albrecht, the class said it was “just playing around” and not making a proposal to the UN
Summary paper hinted at future use: Suggested avatars could help pitch humanitarian cases to donors by personalizing crises

Stanford researchers have uncovered alarming flaws in AI mental health tools, showing that today’s chatbots may stigmatize vulnerable users and deliver dangerously inappropriate responses. In a forthcoming paper, the team evaluated five AI therapy bots against professional standards and found consistent gaps.
Here’s what the study found:
Bias was baked in: Chatbots responded more negatively to fictional patients with schizophrenia or alcohol dependence, often expressing avoidance or fear
Delusions were misread: In one case, the bots treated hallucinations as factual queries and replied without flagging any concern
Suicidal statements went unchecked: When test users hinted at self-harm, several chatbots failed to escalate or respond with care
No progress in newer models: Stanford's Jared Moore said the most advanced models were no better than older ones, calling the state of AI therapy “business as usual and not good enough”
The paper’s title sums it up: “Expressing stigma and inappropriate responses prevents LLMs from safely replacing mental health providers.” While the team sees potential in using AI for journaling, billing, or basic training, they draw a hard line when it comes to therapy itself. These tools may be cheap and scalable but for now, they’re not qualified to care.
