Apple Turns Its AI on by Default in Latest Software Update

Victor J. Blue | Bloomberg

Apple has released software updates for iPhones, iPads, and Macs (iOS 18.3, iPadOS 18.3, and macOS Sequoia 15.3), enabling its AI-powered Apple Intelligence by default on supported devices.

While the feature remains in beta and is limited to a few English-speaking regions, this update marks a significant step toward wider adoption. Apple Intelligence allows users to rewrite text, generate images, and summarize emails and messages, but users can opt out via settings.

Additionally, Apple has disabled the controversial AI-generated summaries for news apps, which had drawn criticism for producing inaccurate and misleading notifications. Notifications generated by Apple Intelligence will now appear in italics to differentiate them from app-pushed alerts. Despite the controversy, Apple plans to reintroduce AI news summaries in a future update.

China's DeepSeek AI Shakes Industry

Reuters

The sudden rise of DeepSeek, a Chinese AI chatbot, has shaken the global tech industry, challenging American dominance in artificial intelligence. Dubbed by some as “AI’s Sputnik moment,” DeepSeek became the top free app on the US App Store, sparking a massive sell-off of major tech stocks, with Nvidia losing nearly $600 billion in market value.

The app’s claim of developing its model for just $5.6 million—far less than the billions spent by US AI giants like OpenAI—has raised skepticism about its financials and methodology. Critics question whether DeepSeek’s success is subsidized or indicative of a significant breakthrough.

DeepSeek’s emergence highlights China’s growing prowess in AI and raises concerns over the effectiveness of US export controls on advanced chips. While its technology, built with Nvidia H800 chips, impresses many, it has left American tech leaders scrambling to reassess their strategies. US President Donald Trump called the moment a “wake-up call” for the tech industry, emphasizing the need for cost-effective AI innovation.

DeepSeek Janus Pro 1B (Generate Images, Chat with PDF) Running in Your Browser

DeepSeek-AI just dropped Janus-Pro 7B, an open-source multimodal AI that’s setting new benchmarks in text-to-image generation and understanding. It outperforms giants like DALL-E 3 and Stable Diffusion 3 in accuracy, stability, and handling complex prompts

Janus-Pro 7B introduces three critical innovations to resolve prior limitations in multimodal AI:

> Utilizes SigLIP-based semantic feature extraction for precise image analysis.

> Extended pretraining on datasets like ImageNet for pixel dependency mastery.

> Trained on 72 million synthetic aesthetic images and 90 million multimodal datasets to improve output stability and precision.

Qwen AI Passes Limits with 1M-Token Context Models

Qwen AI, an Alibaba Group initiative, has announced the release of Qwen2.5-7B-Instruct-1M and Qwen2.5-14B-Instruct-1M, two LLMs that achieve a context window of 1 million tokens. Outperformed GPT-4o-mini and Llama-3 in RULER and Needle-in-a-Haystack benchmarks.

Key features:

> Enables end-to-end processing of legal documents, medical research, and financial reports.

> Open-sourced inference tools lower barriers to implementation.

> Sparse attention mechanisms minimize hardware demands for long-context workloads.
