Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has announced a $100 billion investment in the U.S., marking a significant expansion of its presence in American semiconductor production. This new commitment adds to TSMC’s existing $65 billion investment, bringing the total to $165 billion dedicated to advanced chip manufacturing in the U.S.

The investment will fund the construction of five cutting-edge fabrication plants in Arizona, enabling the production of advanced 4-nanometer chips. These chips are critical for powering AI, consumer electronics, and next-generation computing applications.

Confidential Federated Analytics: A New Standard for AI Privacy
Google Research has introduced Confidential Federated Analytics (CFA), a technique designed to enhance data privacy and transparency while enabling large-scale data analysis. By leveraging confidential computing, CFA ensures that user data remains secure, allowing only pre-approved analyses while maintaining strong anonymization guarantees.
How CFA Works
Traditional federated analytics allows devices to analyze data locally and send only aggregated results to a central server. However, users cannot inspect how their data is aggregated, raising privacy concerns. CFA solves this by:
Publicly defining all analyses before any data is uploaded.
Restricting access to pre-approved processing steps only.
Using Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs) to prevent unauthorized data access.
Real-World Application: Gboard
CFA has been successfully implemented in Gboard, enabling the discovery of 3,600+ new Indonesian words in just two days while ensuring user privacy through advanced differential privacy techniques.
