🌐China Proposes Global AI Governance Framework at WAIC 2025

At the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai, Premier Li Qiang unveiled China’s plan for an international AI governance framework, just days after the US released its own action plan aimed at cementing AI dominance. The pitch is to stop turning AI into a geopolitical weapon and start treating it like shared infrastructure.

What unfolded in Shanghai:

  • China’s global AI blueprint calls for regulatory cooperation and warns against monopolies and tech hoarding

  • Li Qiang’s speech echoed growing tensions over chip exports and U.S. restrictions, framing AI as a public good, not a private club

  • Chinese startups like DeepSeek and Moonshot are closing the gap, delivering high-performance models at a fraction of US development costs

  • AI investment is booming in China, with over $56B in public spending expected this year and a projected 52% ROI by 2030

With over 800 companies in attendance, including major players from both East and West, China used the event to signal its intent to lead on regulation, development, and influence. While the US accelerates its solo run, China is building a stage, inviting the world on it, and offering to co-write the rules. The only question is: who’s willing to share the pen?

According to The Information, OpenAI’s GPT-5 is already in the hands of internal users and the feedback is sharp. One tester called it “extremely positive,” with particular praise for its performance in software tasks. No release date yet, but OpenAI believes the architecture can stretch through GPT-8, and CEO Sam Altman is already using it behind the scenes.

What the model is reportedly capable of:

  • Outperforms past models in code, excelling in both algorithmic problem-solving and legacy code maintenance

  • Adjusts its own reasoning effort, scaling computation based on task complexity with potential user-level control

  • Acts more like a router, possibly combining OpenAI’s GPT and “o” model lines to direct queries dynamically

  • Reclaims developer mindshare, with performance strong enough to challenge Claude Sonnet 4 and push back against Anthropic tools like Cursor

The upcoming generation is set to silently integrate and replace your existing tools. What GPT-5 really breaks is the illusion that these tools still need us. If earlier versions were clever interns, this one’s dangerously close to middle management. When it lands, you won't be typing prompts. You'll be assigning work.

🧭 Microsoft Edge Evolves Into an AI Browser with ‘Copilot Mode’

Microsoft introduced Copilot Mode for Edge on Monday, transforming its web browser into an AI-driven assistant. Currently experimental and optional for Mac and PC users with Copilot access, the feature integrates artificial intelligence directly into web browsing to simplify common tasks through real-time support and interaction.

What Copilot Mode can do:

  • Analyze Active Tabs in real time (with explicit permission), providing contextual insights during research and comparisons.

  • Automate Everyday Tasks like scheduling appointments, drafting emails, and compiling shopping lists directly from Edge.

  • Simplify Content Instantly, summarizing lengthy articles or editing page content without manual copy-pasting.

  • Ensure Clear Privacy Controls, visually signaling whenever Copilot Mode is viewing browsing activity and allowing easy toggling.

Microsoft’s ambition goes beyond smarter clicks. By embedding AI deeply into Edge, the company signals a shift from browsers as passive gateways to browsers as partners. It’s less about speeding up the web, more about handing your digital shadow a notepad and saying, “Take it from here.”

🩺 Google’s SensorLM Learns to Read Your Body Like a Book

Google Research has introduced SensorLM, a family of foundation models trained to translate wearable sensor data into natural language. The models are pre-trained on 59.7M hours of de-identified recordings from over 100,000 people across 127 countries, collected via Fitbit and Pixel Watch between March and May 2024.

What SensorLM is built to do:

  • Understand activity without fine-tuning, classifying 20+ movement types in zero-shot settings with top-tier accuracy

  • Translate sensor signals into language, generating readable captions that outperform generalist LLMs in precision and context

  • Enable natural search across modalities, matching sensor patterns to text and vice versa, which is critical for expert review and retrieval

  • Scale with data and compute, showing steady gains in performance with more hours, more parameters, and more hardware

SensorLM acts as a dictionary for previously inarticulate data. Things like step counts, heart rate spikes, and movement patterns can now be understood in detailed paragraphs. The next major area in AI could be the language of the body itself, not just traditional vision or spoken language, and Google has just provided the initial framework for it.
