Anthropic made its call on Fable 5 but it's permanent this time. Starting today, Max and Team Premium keep the model at half their usual limits. Pro and Team Standard lose it, with a one-time $100 credit as a parting gift.
That $100 goes fast. At Fable's rates a single heavy session eats the whole thing, so for Pro users the real message is upgrade or drop to a weaker model.
The plan a week ago was to cut Fable from subscriptions entirely and charge by the token. GPT-5.6 Sol killed that idea.
With OpenAI matching Fable on the benchmarks at a third the cost, pulling your best model from the $200 plan hands every wavering subscriber a reason to leave.
So the best model stays, but only for the people paying the most.
We said the goodbye to Fable would be the next hello to Opus 5. Anthropic found a third door. No Opus 5, Fable stays, and the Pro tier keeps it.

China's Moonshot launched Kimi K3 on Wednesday, and by Friday it had to stop taking new subscribers. Demand burned through its GPU capacity in 48 hours.
K3 is a 2.8 trillion-parameter open model with a million-token memory, priced at $3 in and $15 out.
Together AI tested it against Fable 5 on coding tasks and found it matches the work at roughly 35% of the price, pulling ahead the harder the job gets.
For two years Chinese models were six to nine months behind the frontier. Bloomberg now says it's two to three months.
Anthropic spent this week rationing Fable because it couldn't serve everyone. Moonshot hit the same wall in two days.
Hugging Face disclosed that an autonomous AI agent breached part of its production systems over a single weekend, with no human running it.
The agent slipped in through a poisoned dataset, chained two bugs, stole cloud credentials and moved across internal clusters, racking up more than 17,000 logged actions.
Then the part that should scare every security team. When Hugging Face fed the real attack logs to Anthropic and OpenAI frontier models to figure out what happened, the safety filters blocked them.
The models couldn't tell a defender doing forensics from an attacker probing for weaknesses.
So the team fell back to an open model running on their own hardware, which also kept the stolen credentials from leaving their walls.
The attacker ran an unrestricted agent at machine speed.
The defenders hit a wall the moment they needed to understand it. Safety tuning meant to stop misuse just slowed down the people trying to protect themselves.
Google pushed back Gemini 3.5 Pro after its own tests showed the model falling short on coding and reasoning. Alphabet dropped about 4.4% the same day, roughly $200 billion gone.
Google showed the model at I/O in May and promised a June launch.
June came and went. The team retrained it on fresh data last month to close the coding gap on OpenAI and Meta, and the results still missed the bar.
