🍎 400,000 Teachers to Get AI Training in OpenAI-Backed National Academy

America’s largest teachers union is teaming up with OpenAI, Microsoft, and Anthropic to train nearly half a million K–12 educators on how to responsibly use AI in the classroom. The new National Academy for AI Instruction, based in NYC, will offer hands-on workshops, online courses, and technical support.

Key moves:

  • OpenAI is pledging $10M in funding and engineering help, including API credits, classroom tool support, and early access to education-focused features

  • Microsoft and Anthropic are also backing the initiative with computing resources and curriculum development

  • Equity is central, with high-needs districts prioritized for access and support

  • The flagship campus opens in NYC, with satellite hubs to follow across the U.S.

This is the biggest national push yet to help teachers lead the AI transition in education. By putting educators at the center of the conversation, this move could shape how the next generation learns with and about AI. As Randi Weingarten put it: “The direct connection between a teacher and their kids can never be replaced.

🕵️‍♂️ AI Clone of Rubio Fools World Leaders

A fake Marco Rubio successfully used an AI voice and Signal to contact world leaders. In a case that feels more like spy fiction than real life, someone impersonated the U.S. Secretary of State using an AI-generated voice and fake Signal accounts to reach foreign ministers, a governor, and even a sitting member of Congress.

What we know so far:

  • It wasn’t just voice cloning: Between mid-June and early July, the impersonator built a full fake Signal identity and contacted at least five officials, including three foreign ministers.

  • Motives: manipulation and access: According to a leaked State Department cable, the actor likely aimed to extract sensitive info or credentials using AI-driven rapport-building.

  • Not an isolated case. In May, someone faked the White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles. In 2023, Russian-linked actors posed as State Department officials targeting NGOs.

Diplomats widely use the secure app. But its privacy features may make it a double-edged sword when deepfakes enter the picture. The line between legitimate outreach and malicious mimicry is vanishing fast. Can secure messaging stay secure in a world of synthetic identities?

🕶️ Meta Drops $3.5B on Ray-Ban Maker to Cement AI Glasses Lead

Meta just took a $3.5B bite of EssilorLuxottica, the world’s largest eyewear giant and parent of Ray-Ban and Oakley, locking in a 3% stake as it ramps up its bet on AI-powered smart glasses. The move signals a deeper hardware play aimed at breaking free from Apple and Google’s mobile stronghold.

Here’s what’s happening:

  • EssilorLuxottica shares jumped 6.9%, their sharpest spike since April; Warby Parker rose 4.3% in sympathy

  • Meta and EssilorLuxottica have co-developed smart glasses since 2021, including Ray-Bans with AI and new Oakley models

  • Over 2M units sold of Ray-Ban Meta glasses since late 2023, validating Meta’s wearable push

  • Meta may increase its stake to 5%, but talks are still ongoing

Meta’s strategy is unmistakable: control the hardware to bypass the gatekeepers of mobile. For EssilorLuxottica, this deal positions them at the intersection of luxury and tech. Neither company has commented yet, but one thing’s certain: AI wearables are Meta’s next battlefield.

🤖 Hugging Face Launches Reachy Mini, A Build-It-Yourself AI Desktop Robot

Hugging Face is officially shipping its first desktop robots. The company just opened orders for Reachy Mini, a fully open source robotics kit designed to let developers build, code, and experiment with AI on their desks. T

What’s inside the box:

  • Build-it-yourself kit with screens for eyes, antennae, and programmable Python interface

  • Hugging Face Hub integration for access to 1.7M+ models and 400K+ datasets

  • Two versions: Lite (wired) ships in August, Wireless (portable) ships later this year

  • Open source hardware designed to be hacked, extended, and shared by devs

CEO Clément Delangue says the robots are meant to spark creativity in the AI community, with users free to develop custom apps and share them across the open source ecosystem. “It’s really important for the future of robotics to be open source,” he said. “I’d rather live in a world where everyone can have control over the robots.”
