Even The ‘Godmother of AI’ Has No Idea What AGI is

Fei-Fei Li, often called the "godmother of AI," expressed her confusion around the concept of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) at a recent AI summit. Despite being a pioneer in AI with achievements like creating ImageNet and leading Google Cloud's AI efforts, she admits she doesn’t fully grasp what AGI truly means, highlighting that even experts find it hard to define. OpenAI's definition describes AGI as systems that outperform humans at most economically valuable work, yet Li believes there are more important things to focus on right now.

During her talk, Li also discussed her role in shaping modern AI, the importance of safeguarding AI’s development, and her startup World Labs, which aims to tackle “spatial intelligence” — making AI understand and navigate the 3D world. Additionally, she touched on her concerns about California’s AI bill (SB 1047), emphasizing the need for balanced regulations that focus on the impact of AI on communities rather than penalizing technologists.

Li’s comments show that even the top minds in AI are grappling with the future direction of AGI and how society should manage its rapid advancement.
