Meta has carried out its largest AI shake-up yet, after Alexandr Wang, the 28-year-old head of Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL), told staff in a memo that “superintelligence is coming” and the company must reorganize to meet it. The restructure dissolves entire teams and puts most AI leaders under Wang’s direct command, underscoring Meta’s high-stakes bet on surpassing human intelligence.
Here’s what the memo revealed:
Four pillars: MSL will now operate through research, training (via the small TBD Lab), product, and infrastructure.
TBD Lab’s mandate: Train large-scale models aimed at superintelligence and explore new directions such as an “omni model.”
FAIR integration: Meta’s long-standing AI research group, led by Rob Fergus and chief scientist Yann LeCun, will now directly funnel innovations into MSL’s training runs.
New leadership: Nat Friedman, ex-GitHub CEO, reports to Wang on product; Shengjia Zhao leads research; Aparna Ramani takes charge of AI infrastructure spanning GPU clusters, data pipelines, and tools.
The move shutters Meta’s AGI Foundations team, the second major AI unit dissolved this year, and redistributes staff into FAIR, infra, and product. While Wang acknowledged the disruption, he framed the new design as essential to accelerating Meta’s path to superintelligence. For a company that has already reorganized multiple times in six months, this centralization underscores Meta’s determination to run faster.
⚖️ xAI Sues Ex-Engineer Over Trade Secret Theft

Elon Musk’s xAI has filed a lawsuit against former engineer Xuechen Li, accusing him of stealing confidential Grok data just days before cashing out millions in equity and resigning to join OpenAI. The case adds fuel to the already white-hot competition for AI talent and intellectual property.

Equity exit: Li sold $7M in xAI stock in July, resigned soon after, and accepted an OpenAI position set to start mid-August.
Alleged theft: xAI says Li downloaded proprietary Grok secrets “with features superior to ChatGPT” onto personal devices.
Cover-up attempt: The company claims Li admitted to taking the data in an Aug. 14 meeting while also trying to hide activity by deleting logs and renaming files.
High-stakes response: xAI is seeking an injunction blocking Li from working at OpenAI or any competitor while the case proceeds, plus financial damages.

Mukesh Ambani, India’s richest man and chairman of Reliance Industries, has unveiled Reliance Intelligence, a new subsidiary tasked with building the country’s AI backbone. The plan pairs Reliance with Google Cloud and Meta in a bid to create national-scale infrastructure and enterprise AI solutions, positioning India closer to the global AI race led by the U.S. and China.
Here’s what’s inside the plan:
Google partnership: A dedicated AI cloud region will launch in Jamnagar, Gujarat, with Reliance using Jio’s network and energy assets to support large-scale deployments.
Meta joint venture: A â‚ą8.55B ($100M) investment under a 70/30 split will bring Llama-based enterprise AI tools to Indian and select global markets.
IPO on the horizon: Ambani revealed plans to take Jio public in 2026, after delays and years of speculation.
Broader ecosystem push: Reliance also showcased JioFrames smart glasses, AI-powered features for JioHotstar, and upgrades to its JioAICloud consumer service used by 40M people.
Reliance is reportedly in talks with OpenAI as well, with details expected during Sam Altman’s India visit next month. đź«€ AI Stethoscope Detects Heart Disease in 15 Seconds

An AI-enabled stethoscope developed by Imperial College London and Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust can detect three major heart conditions in under 15 seconds. Results from a large real-world trial, unveiled at the European Society of Cardiology’s congress in Madrid, show it could double or even triple diagnostic rates in primary care.
Here’s what the study found:
Massive scale: More than 12,700 patients were examined across 200 GP surgeries, covering 1.5M people in North West London.
Faster diagnosis: Patients scanned with the AI device were 2.3x more likely to be diagnosed with heart failure, 3.5x more likely to be diagnosed with atrial fibrillation, and 1.9x more likely to be diagnosed with valve disease.
Life-saving potential: Early detection is critical, since heart failure often goes unnoticed until emergency hospitalization — the AI tool flags symptoms much earlier.
Real-world hurdles: Despite results, 70% of GP surgeries stopped using the devices after 12 months, citing integration challenges.
Roughly a million people in the UK live with heart failure, and over 70% are only diagnosed after arriving at hospital in crisis. By upgrading a 200-year-old tool with AI and ECG sensors, doctors may finally get a frontline device for spotting conditions before they become deadly.
