Welcome back! Claude Code now says no to one type of reverse engineering. OpenAI is cracking down on people who stack paid ChatGPT accounts on one device to pay less for more usage, and Elon Musk admitted Grok Bot costs too much to run. OpenAI also has an agenda to make you okay with data centers.

In today's Generative AI Newsletter:

  • Claude: What will Claude refuse to build for you now?

  • ChatGPT: What happens when you hit ChatGPT's new device limit?

  • Grok: Why are Grok Bot users running out so fast?

  • OpenAI: Why does OpenAI want to rebrand data centers?

Claude won't help you make games

Ask Claude Code to build a game similar in description to one that exists and it'll now say no.

Several indie studios have cancelled public demos in recent weeks, scared someone would feed them to an AI and ship a copy first.

  • Anthropic just confirmed the change, saying copying someone else's game with Claude breaks its usage rules.

  • A studio making digital board-wargame modules for paying customers says Claude now refuses that work.

  • Its refusals started right after it asked Claude whether the new rule applied.

  • Try to convince Claude that it’s actually a new idea, but if it already made up its mind, your idea will be deemed stolen and it won’t help.

OpenAI cracks down on ChatGPT account stacking

OpenAI now caps how many paid ChatGPT accounts you can use on one device, and it hasn't said what the number is.

Go over it and you'll see "Device limit reached." Signing out doesn't free up a slot, and you can get kicked out later even after your payment went through.

The cap covers ChatGPT Go, Plus and every Pro plan. Free, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts don't count.

If you need more usage, OpenAI points you to buying credits instead.

  • Starting in December, ChatGPT and Codex will share one usage allowance on Plus, Pro and Business.

  • It'll be measured in tokens, so bigger models and harder tasks drain it faster.

  • Quick chats with Instant models won't count against it.

  • The $200 Pro plan already lost half its usage on Friday.

OpenAI calls the device cap a security measure.

Musk admits Grok Bot costs too much to run

Elon Musk admitted that Grok Bot is too expensive to run for what it earns.

Users had asked him for a reset after burning through their weekly allowance way faster than usual, one with four days still to go. Musk replied that serving Grok Bot had become unsustainably expensive for the revenue it makes.

Grok Bot runs tasks in the background on its own computer, from research to browsing the web, which eats far more computing power than a chat reply.

  • SpaceXAI, Musk's AI company formerly called xAI, launched it on Aug 11.

  • It grew to about 800,000 paying users a week within two months.

  • It has no price of its own and comes with SuperGrok plans starting at $30 a month.

  • Musk didn't say if prices will change.

Earlier this year, he floated putting ads in Grok's answers to help pay for the GPUs. Maybe this is what will happen soon.

OpenAI wants a new name for data centers

Data centers are facing a backlash across the USA, so OpenAI wants to start calling its own "AI compute campuses."

It's part of a policy and PR push OpenAI plans to launch right after Tuesday's midterms, when Democrats are expected to win back the House.

  • OpenAI will push Congress for mandatory speed limits on the most powerful AI, so people stay in control of it.

  • It'll propose state laws giving communities a say in how projects get built and what they get out of them.

  • It points to a huge project in Pike County, Ohio that promises thousands of jobs.

  • OpenAI's head of global affairs says AI will be the issue of the 2028 presidential race.
